Transmission Maintenance Tips
- Have your transmission serviced every 25 to 30 thousand miles:
- Transmissions rely heavily on the condition of its fluid. Burnt fluid loses the ability to protect the moving parts inside the transmission. This may cause internal problems over time. A transmission service (which includes a fluid and filter change) lubricates and protects the internal components of the transmission.
- Check the level and condition of your transmission fluid on a regular basis:
- To check the fluid level in your transmission, make sure the vehicle is running in park or neutral (depending on the type of car – check owner’s manual.) When you check the dipstick, make sure the fluid is between the “add” and “full” mark.
- Inspect the fluid on the transmission dipstick to determine the condition. Normal color is red or light brown. Dark brown or burnt transmission fluid indicates internal damage due to overheating.
- If the fluid level is low or the transmission fluid is dark or burnt, bring your vehicle in for service or contact us for guidance.
Check the ground for leaks:
- Discovering a leak early may help you to avoid further damage to your transmission. To check for leaks, park the vehicle on a clean spot. Transmission fluid is usually red or light brown. If you suspect a transmission leak, bring the vehicle in or contact us to inspect the cause of the leak.
- If you experience any transmission problems, bring your vehicle in as soon as possible:
- Common indications of transmission problems include noise from the transmission, delays in shifting gears, slipping in and out of gears, and leaking or low transmission fluid levels. Be sure to bring the vehicle in as soon as problems occur to minimize major repair costs.
